Cinderella

Sarah and Tom Mallory co-wrote a version of Cinderella to be performed outside for production in December 2009. Sarah also directed this first production, a promenade piece whereby the audience followed the action up and down the street. The Narrator was a parking warden, the Ugly Sisters appeared out of a cleaning van, Buttons was a pizza delivery boy and the Fairy Godmother was a rapping, Supreme Maker Over Fairy, or SMOF!  The production ran at 40 minutes, and despite snow at some performances, the show was a complete success.

‘The old story is brought up to date. The sisters run a mobile laundry and bully poor Cinders into doing most of the work and her only friend and admirer is Buttons a Pizza delivery man who supplies her with sustenance. The gorgeous Prince is a manufacturer and purveyor of fantastic foods and is looking for a girl who can eat and eat but not get fat. Cinders seems to fit the bill, she has a monstrous appetite with no perceptible increase of avoirdupois, but we have to reckon with her ugly sisters who can get fat on a couple of aspirins.

The script by Sarah Henley and Tom Mallory is witty and full of innovative ideas and the cast obviously have a ball. The narrator is a heavily disguised Tim O’Hara who plays a traffic warden in thick pebble glasses like the bottoms of coca cola bottles. He introduces the various characters – like the truly hideous Ozzi Sisters Kylie and Danni – played by Luke Ireland and Dan Frost and; the supreme makeover fairy (Jamilla Jennings Grant) who insists on talking in really appalling rhymed couplets. Vikki Jo is a sweet and charming Cinders. Robin Owen is a personable Prince, the adorable MicKey Hope plays Buttons and Michael Norledge is a fashion crazy Dandini.

Do get along there if you can – fill yourselves with Mince pies and Hampstead fresh air. You are given the opportunity to do PT and join in a Conga line. It’s a very worthwhile weekend adventure – wonderful for the kids. All fantastically good fun!’
